Personal Background: (5 sentences. Culture, nationality, schooling, important life events, etc.)
Jan began her love for photography in the early 70s. She began getting into art a bit earlier with a passion for painting. Some of her best work is held at the museum of modern art in New York. She attended the Pratt institute of Ohio State University. Jan grew up in Plainfield, New Jersey. She had many exhibitions including the Light Gallery in New York City and the Max Protech Gallery.
Born in 1943, died in 2012
Style: (5 sentences. What visual characteristics does this artist’s work possess? If you can compare it to a painting or art history style please do.)
Very bland style. It stays pretty consistent throughout her work in painting and photography. She also seems to prefer photographing household items in very still-life environments. Her work gives me a very 1930s vibe. This is because she does somewhat old fashioned items in bland environments.
Philosophy: (5 sentences. What were the major ideas behind this artist’s work? Where they personal, political, social, etc. What were they trying to “say” with their photographs?)
She always said she just loved art. Early in her life it was painting and then evolved into photographing. She said the reason for her often photographs of kitchen utensils was because it was a way to “confound” perspective and to transform light into some type of object. I definitely see this in both her photography and paintings. Overall I think she enjoyed making typically bland objects and turning them into something more interesting with her art.
Influences: (5 sentences. How has the photographer influenced you in your work or who were they influenced by?)
Her work is very bland and looks drawn. The unity in some of her work is the most influencian in my opinion, the lighting is also very consistent throughout her work. Jan said that she was mostly influenced by the College she attended. Her photography was quoted to have been inspired by her painting early on in her career. I’d say this is obvious because her paintings and photographs both have that same still-life 1900s feeling to it.
